Assistive Devices That Your Chiropractor May Recommend

Your local chiropractor will use adjustments and other techniques to restore the natural position of your spine and other parts of your body, but the healing process may not end at the conclusion of your appointment. Depending on the specific chiropractor's approach, as well as your physical issue, the chiropractor may provide you with an assistive device and ask you to wear it for a set amount of time between appointments. Sometimes, you'll just wear the device for a short period of time each day. For other devices, you'll wear them throughout the day. Here are three assistive devices that your chiropractor may recommend for you:

Back Brace

Many chiropractic patients can benefit from wearing a back brace in between their adjustments. This approach is especially common if you suffer from scoliosis. The severe and unnatural curve of your spine can be partially corrected with a chiropractic adjustment, but it's at risk of slipping back into its improper position in the days between your sessions. Back braces for chiropractic patients come in a variety of styles, but commonly fit over your shoulders and support the entire length of your spine. These devices aren't bulky, so you're typically able to wear your back brace with ease under your clothing.

Shoe Orthotics

Depending on the nature of your issue, your chiropractor may advocate the use of orthotics in one or both of your shoes. Although you likely don't associate foot health with chiropractic care, problems with your legs, ankles, or feet can translate into pain elsewhere in the body. You may be visiting the chiropractor for the relief of knee pain, for example. If your ankle falls to the inside when you walk, it can put a strain on your inner knee. With a specially designed shoe orthotics that will prevent this falling action, you'll notice a reduction in your discomfort.

Knee Brace

You may leave the chiropractor's clinic with a knee brace that you can wear during prolonged periods of walking and standing. This is especially the case if you've visited the chiropractor for knee adjustments. The adjustments can help, but if you happen to slip or step awkwardly in the meantime, you could aggravate the knee before it's fully healed. A knee brace will keep the knee in the correct position for you. If you're seeking a new chiropractor, it's a good idea to call a few clinics to determine which ones recommend the use of assistive devices, as these devices can be instrumental in your healing.
