New Truckers And DOT Physicals: Overcome Your Health Limitations With These Tips

If you recently graduated commercial truck driving school, you may spend most of your time searching for the right job. One of the things perspective employers may require you to do is obtain a DOT physical before you operate vehicles 10,000 pounds and over. Health limitations, such as sleep apnea and back pain, can affect your ability to drive safely. If you have a health problem that affects your driving ability, take steps to improve them now.

Obtain Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is a silent disorder that affects adults of all walks of life, including commercial truck drivers. The condition causes you to pause, or stop, breathing multiple times a night. The pauses prevent your body from getting the rest it needs to stay active, alert, and aware on the road. Drivers who suffer from untreated sleep apnea may have problems staying awake on the road. Some drivers actually fall asleep at the wheel, which can lead to accidents and other hazards.

If you think you have sleep apnea, see a doctor for care right away. A doctor can use different tools to help you breathe better at night. After you obtain sleep apnea treatment, contact a chiropractor for your back pain.

Visit a Chiropractor for Back Pain Treatment and DOT Testing

A chiropractor can examine your back to see if you have problems with your vertebrae (spinal bones) and muscles. Some adults develop problems with their discs and nerves. The injuries can make it difficult to sit up straight in your truck's cab or hold on to your steering wheel. A chiropractor may treat your back pain with deep tissue muscle massage, spinal compression, and lumbar spinal adjustments.

Once your back pain improves, a chiropractor can perform a DOT physical on you. The physical may include taking your vital signs, checking your hearing, and examining your vision. The physical may also examine your ability to use your arms, legs, and hands. If the muscles in your arms, legs, and hands are weak, you may have problems braking, steering, or changing gears.

If you have problems in any of these areas, a chiropractor can refer you to a physician for additional care. If you pass your DOT physical, a chiropractor can complete your medical certification forms for you.

If you need a DOT or DMV physical or treatment for your health limitations soon, contact a professional chiropractor in your area today.
